"Annie's Song" (also known every bit "Annie'due south Vocal (You lot Fill Up My Senses)") is a song in 3
4 time written and recorded by American singer-songwriter John Denver. The song was released as the pb single from his 8th studio anthology Back Home Again. It was his second number-one song in the United States, occupying that spot for two weeks in July 1974. "Annie'southward Song" also went to number one on the Easy Listening chart.[i] Billboard ranked it every bit the No. 25 vocal for 1974.
It went to number i in the U.k., where information technology was Denver's only major hit single. Four years later, an instrumental version likewise became flautist James Galway'due south only major British hitting.
Groundwork [edit]
"Annie's Song" was written as an ode to Denver'south married woman at the time, Annie Martell Denver. Denver "wrote this vocal in July 1973 in about ten-and-a-half minutes i day on a ski lift" to the top of Aspen Mountain in Aspen, Colorado, every bit the concrete exhilaration of having "but skied down a very hard run" and the feeling of total immersion in the beauty of the colors and sounds that filled all senses inspired him to retrieve about his married woman.[2] [3] Annie Denver recalls the beginnings: "It was written subsequently John and I had gone through a pretty intense time together and things were pretty good for united states. He left to go skiing and he got on the Ajax chair on Aspen mountain and the song just came to him. He skied down and came home and wrote information technology down... Initially it was a dear vocal and it was given to me through him, and all the same for him it became a fleck like a prayer."
"The kickoff time I heard 'Annie's Song,' I told John it had the aforementioned melody equally Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony, Second Movement," says Milt Okun. "He walked over to the pianoforte, sat for an hour and came back, and the merely thing remaining from Tchaikovsky was the first five notes. It was fantastic."[four]
Critical reception [edit]
Shawn K. Haney of Allmusic noted the song's expressive emotionality, calling information technology an "ever then romantic tearjerker". Haney praised "Annie'south Vocal" as "ane of Denver'due south finest achievements".[v] Billboard called it a "fine love song."[6]

On July 4, 2016, Ville Valo released a cover version of "Annie's Song" in Finnish, titled "Olet mun kaikuluotain" ("You lot're My Sonar").[22] The lyrics were by Hector, and the song had previously been recorded in 1976 by Freeman.[22] Ville Valo's version was released as a tribute to Finnish characterization Honey Records, who celebrated their 50th ceremony in 2016.[22] Valo's version was also the first release from the label in over thirty years.[22] Valo commented on the vocal, stating: "'Kaikuluotain' is a childhood favorite of mine, to the beat of which many a sleepless nighttime ended up in tears. To this twenty-four hours it gives me cold shivers and goosebumps."[22] The vocal would continue to attain number ane on the Finnish Download Chart.[23]
Valo's version too received a music video, directed past Ykä Järvinen.[24] Released on July 11, 2016, the video features scenes of Valo walking around Helsinki, done in tribute to Aki Kaurismäki's film Calamari Spousal relationship.[24] The video received the Emma Award for Video of the Twelvemonth in 2017.[25]
